The Awesome God We Serve

by

“I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart; I will tell of all Thy wonders. I will be glad and exult in Thee; I will sing praise to Thy Name, O Most High.” (Ps. 9:1-2)

I’m in one of those places right now where my heart is just in awe of the Creator. This morning I was reading with Kristen in her Biology textbook and ya know, sometimes it just amazes me to think of this incredible creation we are a part of. The chapter we were reading was on microscopic organisms, namely bacteria. We were looking at this diagram of a cell, and discussing the different parts: the cell membrane, DNA, flagellam, etc. and the book was saying how the cell membrane can decide what to let into the cell and what to keep out. (Not in those words! haha… but that was the idea!) And I’m thinking….how does it know?? how does that little microscopic cell know what to let in and what to keep out?? That’s just baffling to me! God has created these little tiny things that I can’t even see and has given them this ability. Wow!!

And then as I was reading my Bible later I read this: “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.” (Ps. 19:1-2) These verses take my mind back to a video that I saw recently when I started the book, Crazy Love (by Francis Chan–which I highly recommend) The video can be seen at www.crazylovebook.com.  Just go to the website, click on videos, then on “The Awe Factor of God.” It gives you a view of earth from space, then continues out to give you a view of our solar system, then the Milky Way galaxy, and so forth. It’s just AMAZING to think of how BIG this universe is!!

This God that we serve is so HUGE that the heavens can’t contain Him. Yet He’s so intimately acquainted with us, that He creates cells so tiny that we can’t even see them. Is that not incredible?? These two paradoxical characteristics (transcendent/immanent) are clearly taught in Scripture, and I think my favorite verse describing them is this:

Isaiah 57:15 “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,  to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.’ ”

Isn’t that just a beautiful thought?! That the High and Holy One dwells with us, the contrite and lowly of spirit! Ahhh!! I hope it never ceases to amaze me!!

Right now I’m doing a Beth Moore Bible study, Believing God. Deanna is hosting the video sessions at her house and then there is daily study time to be completed as well. In the last video session, she (Beth Moore) was talking about who we believe God to be. She said, “our faith will never be stronger than the God we perceive Him to be”. When I read your post it reminded me of what she was saying. I so often seem to get my mind on myself and keep God in the small space I have created for Him. No wonder I lack faith when I pray or have a hard time believing that He can do the impossible! Yet despite this, as you said, I love that this amazing creator God stoops down to us. In the video she talked about the verse, “Know that the Lord, He is God” She said the first mention of Lord refers to His covenant name; Jehovah, which always speaks to His covenant relationship with His people, and the second mention of God refers to His name; Elohim or Creator God. The continual reminder that my God is both Jehovah and Elohim is an amazing thought that should always keep me aware that He is worthy of both my unwavering faith and my unending devotion.
Also, I watched that video. Wow! What a good reminder that if all of that is my God’s footstool – nothing is impossible to Him!

Oooo….I love that name thing!! Jehovah and Elohim…what a beautiful picture of these 2 characteristics. I’m finding it interesting to hear about different views that people have of God.

I think my view is alot like yours…I tend to focus more on the aspects of His nature that have to do with His being close to me, involved in the details, right here with me. And I don’t focus enough on His “Bigness”…that’s why that video was so good for me to see. Wasn’t that so incredible?!

Don had the opposite view of God. He speaks often now about how his view of God changed when he was transformed a couple years ago. Don used to see God as distant, huge, way out there, and too far away to be involved in the details of our lives. When God opened his eyes, that was one of the first things he came to understand–that God IS right here among us, in us, with us…and VERY involved in our lives.

So somehow we have to try to grasp BOTH aspects of God’s nature and character. If we don’t, then-like you said- our faith won’t be as strong as it could be, because we’re not perceiving Him as He really is.

    Thanks, Meredith, for sharing that!!
